Show Notes

The Ronstadt family has been in Tucson, AZ for five generations and the next generation is growing fast! That being said, if we rewind back to 1995, Michael J. Ronstadt, father of cellist Michael G. Ronstadt of the Nathans & Roncast, we find some music that has never seen the digital light of day.  Michael J. Ronstadt (“Papa Mike”) closed down the Ronstadt Pump Company in the early 90’s to take $100 a week playing music at Cragin Elementary school. He sang and played guitar, bringing old cowboy music, Mexican music, Irish lullabies, and kids’ music to all the classrooms. […]

[00:00:07] Speaker A: Hi, this is Michael Ronstadt and you're listening to the second bonus episode of The Nathan's and Roncast. This week we're featuring my very own Aunt Susie or Gretchen Ronstadt. Going down from the oldest, you have my Uncle Peter and then you have Linda Ronstadt, who you all know of, and then you have my dad, Michael J Ronstadt. Back in 1995, my dad, Michael J Ronstadt, went by the name Mr Ronstadt at our elementary school. He created two albums under the moniker Mr Ronstadt. The first one came out in 1995 on cassette and compact disc. It featured a ton of family members, including the Ronstadt cousins, which was made up of my dad's first cousin Bill and my dad's other first cousin John Ronstadt. Their harmonies were impeccable and their arrangements were stunning. If you find the album live and canelo, please pick it up. You will not be disappointed on the album Little Song of Singing in My Heart by Mr Ronstadt, released in 1995, the track that features my very own Aunt Susie is Red River Valley. It's a traditional song that I heard growing up over and over with her singing it. And I'm so thankful that my dad decided to feature her voice on this kid's album. I want to tell you about a few little things before we play the track, but this track was recorded, engineered and mixed by Jim Brady at Jim Brady Recording Studios in Tucson, Arizona. You can still record there with Jim Brady and you can also work with my brother Petey Ronstadt, who is another engineer at Jim Brady Recording Studios. And he has been playing at his daughter Annabelle's Elementary School as Mr Ronstadt. So he is carrying on the tradition that my dad started when we were kids. Without any further ado, here is Susie Ronstadt singing Red River Valley. [00:01:53] Speaker B: From this valley they say you are going how I'll miss your bright eyes and your smile for they say you're taking the sunshine that brightened my pathway a while come and sit by my. [00:02:21] Speaker C: Side if you love me do not hasten to bid me I do just remember the Red River Valley and the one who has loved you so true. [00:02:44] Speaker B: I've been thinking a long time, my darling of those sweet words you never would say now my heart is heavy with sorrow? For they say you are going Away? [00:03:09] Speaker C: Come and sit by my Side? If you love me do not hasten to bid me I do. Just remember the Red River Valley and the one who has loved you so. [00:03:32] Speaker B: True I have promised you darling let never will a word from my lips cause you pain but my heart would be yours forever if you only would love me again come and sit by. [00:04:02] Speaker C: My side. If you love me, do not hasten to bid me. I do. Just remember the Red River Valley and the one who has loved you so true. [00:04:46] Speaker A: I hope you enjoyed that beautiful rendition of Red River Valley. If you want to find out more information about Petey Ronstadt and his Mr. Ronstadt adventures, he has a YouTube channel called Mr. Ronstadt. So look it up. Look at the videos. Enjoy the music. If you want to find out more about Nathan's and Ronstadt, just go to nathansandronstadt.com. If you're curious about any of the other family members, just look up some Ronstadts. My name is Michael Ronstadt. I'm the nephew of Linda Ronstadt. I play cello, so Michaelronstadt.com is the website that I've got. My dad passed away in 2016, but you can still find videos of him performing with his old group, Ronstadt Generations, as well as the Santa Cruz River Band. And the leader of the Santa Cruz River End was Ted Ramirez. Last but not least, Susie Ronstadt's son, Kiko Hakami has a trio that is outstanding. And if he's playing anywhere in Tucson, Arizona, please go see him.
