Serenity Fisher & The Cardboard Hearts is a family band in many senses of the phrase, and not just because Michael, who plays cello, is married to the lead singer (pictured in the center here). There are all kinds of family ties that bind this group together, literal and figurative. The band blends playful pop-rock with a Tim Burton-esque quirkiness, which is especially true on this song. A wordsmith, Serenity coaxes stories into becoming songs by telling her truth, writing lyrics that are especially visual, and melodies that are dreamy. She is a powerhouse singer whose nuanced vocals vary from bluesy belt to sultry […]

[00:00:07] Speaker A: Hi, welcome back to the Nathans and Ron cast. This week we have a new mini episode featuring the amazing Serenity Fisher and the Cardboard hearts. This band is based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, and I happen to play cello in the band. And on top of that, I am married to Serenity Fisher, but we're not featuring this band because I'm married to the lead singer. It happens to be a family band based in Cincinnati, Ohio. It features Serenity Fischer on lead vocals and piano, and she's the main songwriter. Serenity's dad, Bobby Fischer, plays anything with frets that includes ukulele, mandolin, electric guitar, acoustic guitar. He even does some glockenspiel. And he plays piano occasionally. We also have the amazing violin player, Rose readmiller Gouda. Now, Serenity's mom was there in the room when Rose was born. So basically she's family. And then we have Matt Halverson, who is the pan global percussionist, has percussion instruments from all around the world in his setup. It's very unique. It's very cool. We've known him for so long that he's family. I happen to play cello and I also play a little bit of guitar. We all sing harmonies. We take turns singing leads. And this song called Winter, serenity Fisher and the cardboard hearts went into the radio station WGUC to record on their beautiful grand piano. And Rick Andres was at the board recording and mixing us. He recorded this for a fundraiser that WGUC had going on. We didn't do anything with the track after the fact, so we want to share it with you because we think it's special. I want you to pay attention to the lyrics, the music, how everything ebbs and flows. This band has dynamics and dynamics make a song really pop. And I think when you have all the elements, you have basically a triple threat with this song that really makes it something special, and I truly believe you're going to enjoy it. Here it is, without any further delay. Winter by Serenity Fischer and the cardboard hearts. [00:02:24] Speaker B: Winter sings a louder bye to the people last a floating by solitude as the dreamers keep to the empty rooms of the sea it's hard to know when the snow will fall and I don't want to go at all but I can't ignore her call. [00:02:59] Speaker A: She'S a. [00:02:59] Speaker B: Slippery kind of woman her arms can hold her arms cannot bend better go the way she blows, yeah never know just what she'll show yeah I feel winter coming on me though I think it's spring we're so the flowers sing I've been hiding safe in summer's greenery. I know the scenery must change. It's hard to walk in the sea of snow. It's mystic, happy wherever I go, but I know winter is guiding me, the dark place inside of me. It's time for ripening. Then comes spring, then comes spring. Snow falls thick on all that's green. Sky darkens over every little thing. The sky turns from blue to gray, from blue to gray. The sun laughs, gives me a kiss, then flies away. My eyes turn from blue to gray, from blue to gray, and this that's warm gives way to truth and melts away. Winter sings a lot of fights, a melody that'll make you cry, it isn't meant to hurt you, it'll stretch you, stomp you but it nurtures too, oh winter, sing your lullaby to me, to that which I no longer need. Harvest me, fill me and empty me, you green trees, green grass, green things, I'll see you soon, while I'm going, it's freezing, you could not come alone, but I've got a good coat, a good hat, good shoes. The sky turns from blue to gray, from blue to gray, shaken as I am, myself is strong. My time's been wild away. My eyes turn from blue to gray, from gray to blue I rise from depths, from heights, from widths of only what is true. Winter sings a louder purple eyes are floating by. Solitude is the dreamer's key to the empty rooms of a blow. It seems hard to walk in a sea of snow. It's a mystic cloud near wherever I go, but I know winter is guiding me. The light is spark inside.
